Topical Steroid Creams May Raise Osteoporosis, Bone Fracture Risk
Higher doses of topical corticosteroids – commonly used as creams to treat inflammatory skin disorders – are linked to an increased risk of osteoporosis, some recent research has found. They are also associated with a higher risk of major osteoporotic fracture connected to osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis and related bone fractures are huge health burdens globally and have increased dramatically from 1990 to 2019. Previous studies have shown a possible link between systemic corticosteroid use and increased osteoporosis risk, but research on topical steroid use and osteoporosis has been inconclusive.
The most recent study analyzed health data from over 800,000 participants with and without osteoporosis or bone fractures. Compared to no topical corticosteroid use, low, medium, and high cumulative doses were linked to a 1.22-1.34 higher risk of osteoporosis and a 1.12-1.29 higher risk of major osteoporotic fracture.
“This study emphasizes that using topical corticosteroids to treat inflammatory skin conditions should be done very carefully,” said Chia-Yu Chu, MD PhD, corresponding study author, “and clinicians should be aware of these potential side effects.”
Frankincense Extract Shows Anti-Cancer Activity Against Breast Cancer
An extract from the Boswellia serrata tree – commonly known as frankincense – has shown anti-proliferative effects against breast cancer and may possess anti-cancer activity, a recent clinical trial has found. Notably, these effects were demonstrated in human patients with breast cancer.
Frankincense has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years, including for cancer. In spite of this, it has not yet been utilized in modern medicine, in part due to the fact that an active “pharmaceutical” ingredient has been difficult to identify.
The clinical trial involved 20 patients scheduled to undergo surgery for breast cancer. They took a Boswellia supplement each day up until surgery, and their biopsy and tumor samples were compared with a control group after surgery. The tumors from the supplement group had a significantly slower growth rate than before treatment.
While these results are still very preliminary, study author Nancy Klauber-DeMore, M.D., believes they are promising, saying: “We saw a statistically significant reduction in tumor proliferation compared to the non-treated group, so the implications are that Boswellia, this extract of frankincense, does have anti-cancer activity in humans.”

What is Bioavailability? Key Facts/Tips for Supplement Takers
Nutrients won’t do you much good unless your body can utilize them, which is exactly what bioavailability refers to – the extent to which an active compound or substance can be absorbed and used once you ingest it. This applies to supplements as well as food, which is why you want to look for options that are in their most bioavailable form. Curcumin, for example, is not readily absorbed unless enhanced by something like liposomal delivery. On the other hand, certain compounds and minerals (like iron) can inhibit bioavailability. Acetaminophen Use in Pregnancy May Contribute to Language Delays
Acetaminophen is currently considered to be one of the safer pain relievers that can be used during pregnancy. However, a recent study has found that taking it during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters may contribute to language delays in the child. Greater acetaminophen use was linked to smaller vocabularies at the age of 2 and 3, but the development delays were only considered to be “modest.” The findings still need confirmation from larger studies. Lower Blood Levels of Lead Linked to Better Blood Pressure
A recent study conducted with American Indians has found that reducing blood levels of lead is linked to a significant drop in blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure decreased an average of 7 mm Hg, which is comparable to the effects of medication for lowering high blood pressure. American Indians are at higher risk for lead exposure, but anyone can be exposed to this toxic heavy metal through water, canned foods, cosmetics, and more. Further efforts to reduce exposure could improve heart health for everyone. (More)
Psychotherapy Effective for Treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop following multiple types of traumatic events, including warfare, traffic accidents, and sexual or physical violence. Psychotherapy, which involves directly addressing and talking about the traumatic event(s), has proven to be one of the most effective treatments for PTSD, and some recent research has shown that it can be equally effective for those who have gone through a single or multiple traumatic events. 10 Surprising Causes of Dry Skin
Most people experience dry skin from time to time, but if the dryness isn’t going away, there could be a hidden culprit. Some soaps – and even laundry detergents – strip the oils from skin, leaving it dry, and the presence of fragrance in any skincare product can also dry out skin. Retinol, acne medications, hard water, and hot showers contribute to dryness as well, and dry skin can even be a sign of an underlying health condition like diabetes, thyroid disease, or kidney disease. The average human tongue is just over 3 inches long and is the most flexible muscle in the body. However, it's not so impressive when compared to a chameleon's tongue, which is twice as long as the chameleon itself and can go from 0 to 60 mph in one-hundredth of a second.
